About

 Welcome to our science center

The world today has come to accept that science education in its new form is being restructured around a foundation of activities based on touching, feeling, discovering, inquiring that are at the same time entertaining. All around the world, science centers, museums and science workshops are being established to make the products of this change accessible to wider audiences. These organizations help to bring science education to life outside of the school environment and contribute to making science enjoyable for adults as well. MUBEM Science Education Research & Application Center has been established on the Muğla University campus, an effort that was manifested from similar objectives. Working with the principle of designing, implementing and promoting science-based teaching activities, drawing inspiration from our own culture of thought and education, the center enlists the support of undergraduate and graduate students in its operation.

Discovering an unused space in a basement, the team starting off the project converted this area into a workshop, giving it the name “The Science Kiosk”. The Science Kiosk is conducted in the following manner: Students each year learn in their science classrooms and laboratories the experiments and activities that were produced at the workshop the year before. Embracing the cooperative efforts of persons from every field--from science to art--the Science Kiosk Workshop has rapidly become a Center for Creating, Practicing and Disseminating Science-based Activities.

Some of the activities created by team were given below with their source of questions;
  • Sometimes a good question attached to the student's mind. During the experiments when the ice cubes in a glass of water melt, the level of the water does not change.  Consequently, how can we claim that the iceberg floats on the ocean cause to increase the level of the water?

  • Sometimes the beauty of nature offers us. Usually the blue colour of the seas described by the reflect skylight. How can we explain the view from a boat off shore that dark blue sea under a sunny light blue sky.

  • Sometimes an experience of an event in daily life. As we browse through a shopping center, looking at the decorative mirrors on the stands, made up of little pieces put together, we can sometimes see only one and sometimes more than one image of ourselves. Since characteristics of imaging in a plane mirror are always the same, how is this change explained?

  • Sometimes our blues moments. When we were watching the trees losing their leaves in a windy day, the question come up to our mind “How do trees that shed their leaves get nourished in the wintertime?” can be good question for starting writing an activity.

  • Sometimes an orange in a grocery store. Clarifying buoyancy with a cup of water and an orange.
